Coach John Sherwood has spent more than two decades developing competitive players from their first high-performance foundations into national junior competition, into high level college competition and into the professional ranks. He has become one of the Worlds most recognized developmental coaches.
He has seen the game as a DI College Player, as a Tennis Parent of a National Level Player, as the COO of a multiple club business in the Midwest, as Private Coach, as Coach of a nationally ranked DI College Team, and recently as Manager and Coach of one of the top 6 Tennis Academies in the World.
His work has been published in Tennis Recruiting Network, TennisPlayer.net, New York Tennis Magazine, Florida Tennis Magazine, RSPA (USPTA), Publications and his videos can be seen in multiple countries and languages alongside 39+ of the World's Best and most respected coaches on the Coach Life Website.

Coach Sherwood provides focused, detailed coaching with clear player-centric purpose and progressions.
Detailed and focused work on solid fundamentals, stroke mechanics, efficient footwork, tactics and, most importantly, building solid character in a motivational environment that builds player confidence and inspires!
Detailed progressions with both fed-ball and live-ball training environments in peer groups, never exceeding 4 players on court with a coach, with a 3:1 player-to-coach ratio preferred.
Coach Sherwood is a master at ensuring each player’s developmental and athletic development needs are fully addressed within these physically intense training blocks.
Coach Sherwood can provide insightful guidance in both virtual and in-person settings. This invaluable communication process gives players and parents a look into what’s ahead.
Tournament selection, understanding USTA and UTR, college recruiting, goal setting and developmental priorities. Players, parents and the coach enjoy the journey together.
Coach Sherwood will schedule a time to view your player on court and provide key technical and developmental insights with clear progressions.
This can be done with a simple iPhone and tripod on the player’s end. In this setting, the player can be assisted by a parent or local coach in conjunction with Coach Sherwood.
Send Coach Sherwood a video clip of a specific stroke or strokes you would like feedback, analysis and corrective input on, and he will provide his insights. Fees apply.
Or, send your match video from common tennis video recording services such as SwingVision or PlaySight and receive key tactical points of focus to consider in future competition.
From time to time, Coach Sherwood has time blocks available to travel with players to USTA National Level 1 or professional-level events.
This commitment is considered on a case-by-case basis and requires advance planning and approval, in addition to contract compensation.
Professional players, coaches and agents can secure consultation time with Coach Sherwood to provide insight and input in conjunction with the player’s full-time coaching team to work through a specific technical or developmental issue.

Coach Sherwood believes in building world-class fundamentals in stroke production, footwork, mental skills, tactical awareness, match management and problem solving. This builds a “Total Player” who can be successful throughout their developmental and competitive journey.
Coach Sherwood knows that attention to detail and building solid fundamentals early is an investment in the player’s upside and allows for fewer corrections later in their developmental pathway.
Coach Sherwood highly recommends that each player find a balance between private technical development, small group training, match play, general athletic development, tennis-specific athletic development, injury prevention work and recovery.
Based on age and ability, these priorities will shift and evolve over time. It is also critical to provide young players some unstructured, free, fun and creative time on court with their peers. So many programs, academies and parents miss this component.
Coach Sherwood takes the approach that a player’s mental skills should be a competitor’s number one weapon. There are many subcategories that we build, such as routines, visualization and positive self-talk.
However, Coach Sherwood believes that player confidence—and maintaining confidence regardless of the score—is number one. This allows for the second most important mental skill to occur: problem solving.
How do I beat this opponent today? This point, this game, this match—and how do I adjust my strategy as my opponent adjusts? Coach Sherwood guides players as they develop these lifelong skills.
Coach Sherwood teaches the strategy and tactics of the game early in the developmental pathway, allowing players to dovetail their unique skills and game style with hard statistical data available through video analysis and AI-driven insights, building high Tennis I.Q. competitors.
